Guided by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rhf-frh.ca\/our-initiatives\/learning\/indigenous-teachers-education-initiative\/\">National Advisory Committee on Indigenous Teacher Education (NACITE)<\/a>, the RHF is supporting community-led efforts to increase capacity to hire and train First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis teachers \u2013 creating lasting, positive change for Indigenous communities across Canada. As a part of our Initiative and journey to enrich Canada\u2019s education system with 10,000 Indigenous teachers, we believe we all benefit when Indigenous teachers are in classrooms across Canada.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5246c0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5246c0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This funding stream focused on four themes: Language, Land, Leadership and Love.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ab10e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ab10e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201dLand\u201d reinforced the importance of learning from the land, including understanding First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit ecological knowledge and how Indigenous cultures connect with nature. It involves activities like outdoor education and using the land as a classroom to teach these concepts effectively.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27868f8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"27868f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201dLanguage\u201d focused on preserving, revitalizing, and promoting First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit languages in teacher education, recognizing the critical importance of identity, culture, and knowledge acquisition. This supports initiatives including language teacher accreditation and integrating Indigenous languages into teacher education programs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39c3ae7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39c3ae7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cLeadership\u201d emphasized the importance of First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit leadership in education, focusing on developing leadership skills and capacity among Indigenous educators, with development that supports communities, promotes Indigenous perspectives, and advocates for positive changes in educational policies and practices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d5f2f8e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d5f2f8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201dLove\u201d focused on creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment in First Nations, Metis and Inuit teacher education by emphasizing caring relationships, community connections, and well-being for both educators and students, with initiatives potentially including wrap-around support for students, and integration of the importance of traditional ceremony and customary practices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8cf0b58 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8cf0b58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These four themes emanated from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rhf.dev01.usco.ca\/fr\/impact\/report-captures-insights-from-indigenous-teacher-education-national-summit\/\">RHF\u2019s national gathering on Indigenous Teacher Education<\/a>\u00a0in June 2023, an event that brought together more than 200 leaders in FNIM (First Nations, Inuit, M\u00e9tis) teacher education from coast to coast to coast. We are honoured and proud to highlight and support these grant recipients and their efforts to lead the way in Indigenous teacher education:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56a1bf3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"56a1bf3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Yukon University, Yukon First Nation Education Directorate, First Nation School Board, YK:<\/strong>\u00a0$2 million is being awarded towards the\u00a0<em>Collaborative Indigenous Teachers Education Program<\/em>. The four-year program will transform education by challenging inequitable approaches. In collaboration with Knowledge Keepers, Yukon University will help to bridge the education gap and create culturally responsive learning environments.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6437d34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6437d34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>University nuxe\u0142hot\u2019\u012fne thaa\u0241ehots\u2019\u012f nistameyim\u00e2kanak Blue Quills (Treaty No. 6 Territory<\/strong>): With a $2 million grant to kick start a five-year project,\u00a0<em>kiskeyihtamowin kiskinohamatowin<\/em>\u00a0(<em>teach each other<\/em>) aims to create three distinct teacher education streams \u2013 immersion, elementary and secondary programming. Rooted in Land, language, Ceremony, and relationship, the project is guided by the laws of love, honesty, sharing and strength.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f24179 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f24179\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Gabriel Dumont Institute (SK):<\/strong>\u00a0Over the next four years, the M\u00e9tis-led organization will invest $1,280,000 in grant funding in their\u00a0<em>Expanding Teachers Education Program<\/em>. This will support the institute in expanding their capacity to accept and train more Indigenous students in their journeys to become teachers. The grant will also cover the cost of tuition, living expenses, additional resources, faculties and flexibility for online learning.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6a4542 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c6a4542\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Seven Generations Education Institute (ON):<\/strong>\u00a0The institute will create pathways for Indigenous language teacher training by investing a $2 million grant in their five-year, Indigenous-led project\u00a0<em>Language Creates the Farm Team<\/em>. Adopting the Elders Circle approach, the program integrates culture and land-based teachings with an emphasis on building from an earlier practicum.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9c12a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c9c12a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Mi\u2019kmaq Wolastoqey Centre \u2013 University of New Brunswick (NB):<\/strong>\u00a0A $1,999,000 grant toward their five-year project,\u00a0<em>Culturally Grounded Indigenous Teachers,\u00a0<\/em>will redesign the Bachelor of Education program to include Indigenous language immersion with a land-based approach.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eaecf30 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eaecf30\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>University College of the North (MB):<\/strong>\u00a0Receiving a $2 million grant toward its\u00a0<em>Teacher Training and Language Revitalization in Northern Manitoba: Building Capacity Together<\/em>\u00a0program. The five-year project aims to expand teachers\u2019 training with semi-remote pathways, enhance language certifications, facilitate transitions to BA and BEd programs, and implement a literacy readiness initiative with land-based and language training support.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a12211c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a12211c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) \u2013 McGill University, QC<\/strong>: Their\u00a0<em>Strong Foundations, Strong Partnerships, and Strong Futures: Advancing Indigenous Teacher Education by Investing in Instruction<\/em>\u00a0program is being awarded $1,979,664. Collaborating with education authorities such as Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, Cree School Board, Kahnawake, Kanehsatake Education Centres, and Central Quebec School Board, the partnership is focusing on community-based teacher education and professional development.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f66b33c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f66b33c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Together these projects will help to create transformative, long-lasting changes in Indigenous teacher education systems across Canada by increasing Indigenous representation in the workforce and through the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge, ways of being, and culturally responsive approaches.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a81859 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a81859\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This moment marks an important step in a shared journey. The RHF\u2019s commitment to advancing Indigenous Teacher Education in Canada will see change driven through four main strategies: investing in innovative community-driven programming; creating spaces for convening and connecting; amplifying the stories of excellence and impact in Indigenous teacher education; and rooting our work in better data and Indigenous-led research.
